The great sporting teams in history easily spring to mind – don’t they? England football – 1966, England rugby – 2003, Cooks pancakes – 2019. Well, perhaps not quite the last one. However, with considerable style and panache ‘the Class of 2019’ acquitted themselves admirably in the annual Inter-Livery Pancake races held on Shrove Tuesday.
The Master had pulled rank and ‘invited’ the Second Master and Wardens to join him on the team – and so they had all been in intensive care training for some weeks, practising their tossing whilst moving at speed, ready for the pressure cooker atmosphere of the Guildhall Yard and a sell-out crowd.

Well, did they win I hear you ask? And it’s a fair question – to which we can justifiably take the moral high ground and just reply that it the taking part that is important.
Equally important was that because they were knocked out early, the Cooks were at the front of the lunch queue for the post-match buffet, provided in the Guildhall Crypt, for the first time by an equally outstanding team from Clink Events.
Thank you to those WCC members who turned up to support the team (their family): Ted Horne and Bev and Pam Puxley. Past Master Steve Gibson also appeared for a short while – but only because he had heard that there were pancakes going!!
